A cosmetic treatment is one which is concerned with altering the appearance of a body part or tissue which lies within the bounds of normal variation. Example of Cosmetic Surgery: Rhinoplasty (nose reconstruction) without previous trauma or congenital defect.

Covered for all services eligible for benefits from Medicare up to 100% of the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) fee. Insurance providers usually have their own network of “agreement hospitals” that you can attend and be covered for the hospital costs. If you go to a private hospital which do not have an agreement with the insurer for that particular private hospital, this can result in large out of pocket medical bills. If you need to go to hospital, you should always check with your insurer to discuss your options first.

If you are treated for psychiatric, rehabilitation and palliative conditions in a hospital, you will need to serve a defined waiting period. Waiting periods for each insurer are listed to the right.

If you have a pre-existing condition, a waiting period of 12 months will apply before you can receive benefits towards any treatment for that condition. A pre-existing condition is an ailment or illness where, in the opinion of the insurer appointed medical adviser, the signs or symptoms were evident or would have become evident if you have seen a Doctor, up to 6 months before your health cover started. If you upgrade to a higher level of cover, you must also wait for 12 months to be covered for pre-existing conditions for benefits not previously covered. Please refer to the policy document.

For all obstetrics and pregnancy related services, you cannot claim any services for a defined waiting period.

Emergency service is where you need immediate treatment and there is no other reasonable way to get to a hospital.
